Children Leaders
Overview
Following the devastating Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, many, including me, reacted in amazement at the initiative of the children and community organizers in the U.S. and around the world, as well as the lack of leadership and involvement exhibited by the Trump administration. The demonstrations led to countless activists, media outlets, and viewers stating: “When leaders act like kids, kids act like leaders.”
I, too, wanted to connect the irony of the polarizing responses of America’s youth and those in positions of power, with looped typography spelling out “children acting like leaders” and “leaders acting like children,” joined by “acting like.” The treatments are varied and sporadic up to a point, to portray the urgency. The typography, paired with the energy and images that I captured at New York City’s March For Our Lives on March 22, 2018, inspired me to mock up an 8-second animation with pulsing video reflecting the heart and momentum of the event, along with a protest sign, backpack and button badge.
